Understanding the problem and constraints is the key first step. Sketching and wireframing is a great place to start exploring ideas. UI decisions are heavily influenced by user research and feedback. Animations are used to create the illusion of speed and to delight users. Animated interactive prototypes are created to get a proper feel, gather feedback, and provide the engineers something to model after.
